Malaysia launches sharia-compliant benchmark


Kuala Lumpur-based exchange Bursa Malaysia and the FTSE Group launched the FTSE Bursa Malaysia EMAS Sharia index, a benchmark for sharia-compliant investments, on January 22.

The index will run parallel with the existing Kuala Lumpur Syariah Index (KLSI), until that benchmark is deactivated on November 1. It will then become the country's sole benchmark for sharia-compliant investments.

The benchmark takes the constituents of the FTSE Bursa Malaysia EMAS Index and overlays the Securities
