"Alternatives has become a buzzword in the ETF space," says Adam Patti, New York-based chief executive of index and ETF creator, IndexIQ. The firm, which is the only provider in the US to focus purely on the liquid alternatives market, registered a 42.87% increase in its alternative investment exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in 2012, says Patti.

As well as allowing investors to tap into alternatives, Patti believes this growth can be attributed to adviser preferences moving from mutual funds to ETF
