Winners of the European Single Manger Awards 2013 were honoured at a black-tie dinner (May 29) celebrating the performance and best qualities of the region's industry.

The awards highlighted the outstanding leadership of three unique individuals. Leda Braga, president of BlueCrest Capital management, was recognised for her contribution to the industry, while Winton Capital Management's David Harding was given the lifetime achievement award.

Cern Pension Fund chief executive Theodore Economou, who accepted the award for outstanding contribution to the industry by an institutional investor, urged hedge funds to use their "extremely valuable skillset" to help pension funds protect capital and generate long-term profits.

Best overall group was given to CQS, which also picked up the best investor relations team trophy.

In the one-year performance category, Oceanwood Global Opportunities Master Fund was named best event driven hedge fund, while BTG Pactual Global Asset Management's Global Emerging Markets and Macro Fund nabbed the best global macro award.

Black River Asset Management's senior portfolio manager, Mark Schulze, picked up the award for the best energy/commodities hedge fund.

Hedge fund of the year was handed to Cantab Capital Partners' chief executive, Ewan Kirk, for the CCP Quantitative Fund. Cantab also picked up the most innovative fund trophy for the CCP Core Macro Fund.

This year, for the first time, a separate category recognised the contribution made by emerging managers. Avantium Liquid EM Macro Master Fund picked up a double: best global macro/managed futures emerging manager and emerging manager of the year.

Long-term performance and alternative Ucits funds were also selected for awards.

Around 250 people attended the black-tie dinner held at the Royal Garden Hotel in London.
