EU's Barnier: high-frequency trading needs extra regulation

EU puts high-frequency trading on the block


PARIS – Michel Barnier, the commissioner for internal markets and services at the European Commission, has stated that high-frequency trading requires extra regulation and that the Commission will make specific requirements in the final proposals for amendments to the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (Mifid).

Speaking at the World Federation of Exchanges conference in Paris via videophone, Barnier expressed his concern at what he described to be "excessive speculation" in the crop
