Santander IT collapse leaves A&L customers unable to access accounts online

LONDON – Santander’s UK retail banking arm suffered IT failures that have left former Alliance & Leicester (A&L) customers experiencing substantial problems in accessing their accounts.

The bank, which acquired Alliance & Leicester in July 2008, runs all of its brands, including Abbey National and Bradford & Bingley, on a single IT system, Partenon.

When the bank began migrating A&L accounts onto Santander’s Partenon system in May, IT problems left customers unable to access their accounts
