Germany cold shoulders hedge funds
The German government is relatively hostile to hedge funds, but institutional investors see the advantages of these investment vehicles. Jamie Wynn-Williams examines the legislative and regulatory environment and discusses the future of German industry.
Hedge funds have been given a rough ride in Germany. One former vice chancellor, Franz Muntereing, went as far as to call them Schabe, German for cockroach.
The government's displeasure with the industry means that regulators make it as hard as possible to market a hedge fund to German investors. Strict tax regimes and tricky regulations have been imposed on any who dare to enter the market.
However, some market observers think hedge funds can still woo investors, both retail and institutional
