Who will be on Basel II in the US?

US regulators decided not to apply Basel II to all banks – they’ve been hinting strongly that about 10 banks will be so-called ‘mandatory banks,’ while another 10 or so ‘opt-in’ banks will choose to adopt the advanced approaches by December 31, 2006, alongside the mandatory institutions. In the ANPR, regulators state that banks with total assets of $250 billion or more, or a total on-balance-sheet foreign exposure of $10 billion or more, will be mandatory banks.
