Concerns raised about US consumer privacy

Washington, DC – Concerned about recent illegal access to consumer information by criminals, US lawmakers are moving to impose tighter oversight of consumer data brokers to halt the increasing identity-theft cases in the country.

In his testimony to a mid-March congressional hearing on Identity Theft: Recent Developments Involving the Security of Sensitive Consumer Information, Jon Corzine, the senator for New Jersey and member of the US Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, said he would be introducing the Identity Theft Prevention and Victim Notification and Assistance Bill.

Corzine says the bill would take a comprehensive approach to the problem of identity theft – better oversight, strong standards
