The European Union opened its investigation on retail investment products to the public on July 15, at an open hearing held in the EU buildings in Brussels. The hearing attracted more lobbies than had been expected, 80 of which had submitted their views on the investment industry and how to level the playing field. Richard Jory reports

Investors have never been better served by the products on offer from Europe's various creators of investment products, according to Charlie McCreevy, the European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services, in his opening remarks at the Open Hearing on Retail Investment Products, held in the EC's Charlemagne Building in Brussels on July 15.

McCreevy based his opening comments on the need for compliance with five basic principles. First, investors need clear and accessible information
