Basel regulators issuing QIS 3 spreadsheets soon

Global banking regulators said they would soon issue draft spreadsheets and an information package, including detailed instructions, on the crucial QIS 3 survey that in October will seek information on how banks would be affected by the proposed Basel II capital Accord.

The move is designed to enable banks to start collecting relevant data now and overcome the time constraint that has limited the effectiveness of previous surveys connected with the controversial and oft-delayed Accord. The regulators hope to bring it into force for major banks in late 2006.

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, the architect of the risk-based rules and the body that in effect regulates international banking, said today it would provide participating banks with Excel
