Emerging markets looking to use Basel II

Washington DC -- More than 50 middle-income emerging market nations are planning to implement the new Basel II framework, according to a new survey conducted by the World Bank.

The survey was completed online by 25 supervisors and 78 emerging market banks in April and presented at the World Bank's Risk management workshop for regulators: assessing, managing, and supervising financial risk, held in mid-May.

According to the survey, 80% of the sample has started implementing plans of action, and 60% hope to be ready by 2007 or 2008. The majority of banks in these countries
