Vattenfall to build offshore wind farm in UK, joins forces with ScottishPower

Swedish power company Vattenfall has acquired UK wind farm Thanet Offshore Wind and has joined forces with ScottishPower for Crown Estate’s Round Three of tender bids to develop offshore wind power in the UK.

Vattenfall acquired the rights to build Thanet Offshore Wind in Kent, Britain’s largest project, from CRC Energy Jersey 1 for £35 million. The wind farm is expected to have an installed capacity of 300 MW and will need £780 million of investment for completion in 2010.

The acquisition makes Vattenfall one of the biggest wind power operators in Britain and follows the acquisitions of AMEC Wind Energy and Eclipse Energy in the past month.
