Asia’s total ETF assets surged by 23.9% in the first half of 2019 to a record $244 billion, thanks to an increasing adoption of ETFs into investment portfolios. According to a recent survey conducted by Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX), asset expansion in Asia’s ETF market is set to continue with 89% of Asian-based institutional investors saying that they are using or plan to start using ETFs.

However, the results of the poll highlighted a lack of understanding around the true costs of ETF trading – with investors continuing to overemphasise the importance of expense ratio when selecting ETFs. The survey also revealed a high number of institutional investors who prefer the US as a trading venue – at 77% of respondents – when trading outside home markets, indicating a lack of awareness of tax advantages from trading Asia, in Asia.
