EEX set to compete with EXAA in Austrian spot power market

Austrian energy exchange EXAA will soon have competition for spot trading of physical power in its home market. From April 1, Austrian companies will be able to trade electricity for delivery to most of Austria directly on Germany's European Energy Exchange (EEX).

As a first step, EEX will offer delivery of power in the biggest of Austria’s three control areas, the Austrian Power Grid (APG). It is the first exchange apart from the EXAA to offer this service, which will make life easier for Austrian electricity traders.

Currently, to take delivery of German power, Austrian companies must trade through a subsidiary in Germany that has an agreement with a German transmission operator, said EEX spokesman Stefan Niessen. The Austrian parent must then
