EEX launches coal futures

The European Energy Exchange (EEX) has listed two new coal futures contracts, as well as offering clearing for OTC coal trades. ICE Futures is set to follow with two similar contracts, pending regulatory approval. It is a watershed for the market, but some market participants are concerned that the direct competition is premature.

EEX launched its two coal futures contracts on May 2, and the first coal contract was traded on the same day: a deal between Barclays Bank and Sempra Energy.
