Despite unprecedented levels of volatility in one of Europe's largest structured products markets, Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has been able to steadily increase its market share in Italy at a time when the overall market had been in decline. Its success can be attributed, in part, to its established listed products business.

The bank sold a staggering €2.5 billion of structured notes from September 2010 to September 2011, which, according to figures from Borsa Italiana, the Italian Stock
