Legal rulings hit tobacco firms

The tobacco industry endured a month to forget in May as it lost four legal rulings. As a result headline risk on the industry soared to highs not seen over the past six to eight months.

The most surprising decision came when US District Judge Gladys Kessler denied a request by US tobacco firms to block the Department of Justice (DoJ) from collecting $289 billion in illegal profits. The US government claims that the cigarette manufacturers violated the 1970 Racketeer-Influenced and Corrupt
