EU issues national template to meet renewables targets

The European Commission has issued a template for National Renewable Energy Action Plans (NREAPS) requiring Member States to detail their strategies for reaching 2020 renewable energy targets.

The action plans are a feature of the new Renewables Directive, which came into force last month, setting a new binding target to source 20% of the EU's energy consumption from renewables by 2020. The Directive came amid increasing concerns that renewables targets will almost certainly not be met following a progress report published in April showing that the EU was falling short of its initial 12% renewables target for 2020.

Each Member State must submit a NREAP to the Commission by 30 June 2010
