Big is overrated in Asia, says Ian Sosso, Hong Kong-based head of Commerzbank Corporates and Markets (CBCM) in Asia-Pacific. The 1997/98 financial crisis - which led banks to downsize in the region - and Asia's subsequent revival have levelled the playing field for the niche player, he says. The German bank is a major player in equity and fund derivatives structured products in Europe, but still has a relatively small foothold in Asia, with a presence in Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan.
