Rothschild Australia to offer fund of hedge funds

Rothschild Australia Asset Management will launch a fund of local hedge funds in the second half of the year, according to Andrew Baker, head of products at the asset management firm.

The Rothschild Total Return Fund has been in the incubator phase for 12 months and Baker said that the results are promising enough to launch the fund in coming months.

Rothschild’s fund will referenced to about eight underlying Australian hedge funds. So far, previous fund of hedge funds offerings launched in Australia have been referenced to global hedge funds, such as Colonial First State Investment's Global Diversified Strategies Fund launched last October.

The offer won’t include a capital guarantee and will be offered to professional investors, Baker said. He added that “hedge funds are actively moving ahead” in Australia, with large local players now lining up partnerships with offshore funds. "You’ll probably see an increasing number of professionals start alternative funds,” he said.
