Chasing transparency: replication may be the key

Knowing what investment positions a fund holds and the impact on the fund's risk and returns is invaluable information for investors. Many hedge funds will not provide full transparency to their investors.

Some provide monthly lists of their top 10 positions with some commentary. But even that does not help investors figure out what factors drive a hedge fund portfolio's risk and returns, according to Damian Handzy, chairman and CEO of Investor Analytics (IA), the risk analysis company.
