The index link

The emergence of investable hedge fund indices has made it easier for structured-product makers to link investments to the hedge fund market. John Ferry from Risk Magazine examines the types of structures that are being launched and the attractions for investors.

In June, index company FTSE Group became the latest to launch an investable hedge fund index, joining a list of providers that includes Standard & Poor's (S&P), Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB)/Tremont, Dow Jones and Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI).

These companies believe that by creating hedge fund products that are transparent and standardised, they will entice investors that have traditionally stayed away from the market.
