Hope for increased use of derivatives exchanges by hedge funds

While derivatives may be going through a dodgy patch with regulators and the public, the exchanges that trade these instruments expect hedge funds to increase their use of these markets.

Derivatives exchanges expect to increase the amount of business they do with hedge funds in 2009, despite experiencing a decline in trading volumes as markets deteriorated in the second half of 2008.

Volumes on the international derivatives exchanges fell by almost 10% in the third quarter of 2008, according to figures released by the Bank of International Settlements.
