OCC’s equity-based IM hit record 91% heading into 2025

CCP’s margin base leant further into equities ahead of market turmoil

As of December 31, 2024, clearing members at the Options Clearing Corporation (OCC) posted 91.3% of their initial margin (IM) in equities, marking the highest share on record among eight central counterparties (CCPs) analysed by Risk Quantum that disclose this type of collateral. 

This equated to $177.3 billion in equities IM, with $113.1 billion linked to client accounts and $64.3 billion to house accounts – a 12% increase compared to three months earlier.

Collectively, the eight CCPs held $194
