Impaired loans surge at Canadian banks
RBC leads increase with soured C$1.5bn utility loan
Canadian banks saw gross impaired loans spike by 16.3% to C$30.6 billion ($21.2 billion) in the three months ending January 2025, reaching their highest level in at least five years.
Allowance for credit losses on impaired loans surged 18% to C$7.8 billion, leaving net impaired loans at C$22.8 billion, up 15.8%.
