Fifth Chinese bank nears G-Sib designation

Build-up of trading assets and hard-to-value instruments contributed to Bank of Communication’s G-Sib score increase

Bank of Communications (BoComm) is on the threshold of becoming the fifth Chinese institution to be designated a global systemically important bank, Risk Quantum analysis shows.

The lender’s G-Sib score – calculated by the Basel Committee to categorise too-big-to-fail banks – rose to 120 basis points as of end-2018, up from 118bp a year prior. A bank is labelled a G-Sib if it has a score of 130bp or above.
