Lending to shadow banks accelerates – BIS

Annualised growth rate of loans to non-bank financial institutions hits 13%

Outstanding cross-border loans to non-bank financial institutions increased to $6.9 trillion in Q2, at an annualised growth rate of 13% – almost double the average rate for the past five years, data from the Bank for International Settlements shows.

Over the three months to end-June, loans to these shadow banks increased by $172 billion. The bulk of these new loans were to firms located in one of three countries. Those in the Cayman Islands attracted $37 billion of funding, those in the UK $34
