Global cross-border lending accelerates

Outstanding bank loans to overseas borrowers jumped $1.4 trillion over the three months to end-March, their largest quarterly gain since 2007.

Figures from the Bank for International Settlements show cross-border claims stood at $30.5 trillion in Q1, with lending accelerating to an annualised growth rate of 4.5%, compared with just 1.4% the quarter prior.

Loans to developed countries increased at the fastest clip, at an annualised growth rate of 4.6% in Q1, up from 0.6% in Q4 2018.
