Global bank equity levels return to growth

US lenders made up 28% of global bank shareholder equity

Bank shareholder equity edged up 2% in the first quarter of the year compared with Q4 2018. 

Data from the Bank for International Settlements shows total global bank assets in excess of liabilities swelled by $99.1 billion to $5.9 trillion over the three months to end-March.  

US banks accounted for the largest chunk of global bank equity. Reporting lenders from this country made up 28% of the worldwide total. They also posted the largest quarter-on-quarter increase, of $26 billion, and year
