Concentration of EU banking assets grows

Share of assets held by top five banks in median EU country increases year-on-year

The European banking sector grew more concentrated in 2017, with the median EU country having 63% of its total banking assets held by its five largest lenders, an increase from 61% in 2016.

Data published by the European Central Bank show concentration has steadily risen every year since 2013, when the median level of concentration was 58%.

However, the distribution of concentration across EU countries is dramatic, ranging from 26% for Luxembourg to 97% for Greece.
