Editor’s letter: Don’t stifle innovation with regulation

“There’s a danger that we sow the seeds of the next crisis in not thoroughly analysing the causes of this one.”

So says Simon Grensted of LCH.Clearnet in Pass the Microphone on page 51. It’s a warning regulators would do well to heed if they are not to stifle much of the innovation in the energy markets with regulation aimed at making almost all trades cleared.

Grensted warns of creating unintended consequences with blanket regulation. While one of the major aims of the regulation on clearing is
