Am 1. April 2008 führte der deutsche Energieversorger RWE mit Hauptsitz in Essen die Abteilungen Energiehandel und Midstream-Gas zu dem Bereich RWE Supply & Trading zusammen, der für Aktivitäten an den Großhandelsmärkten, Rohstofflieferung sowie Asset-Optimierung verantwortlich ist. Laut einer RWE-Erklärung bestand der Zweck der Zusammenlegung darin, "alle sich im wandelnden Marktumfeld an den europäischen Großhandelsmärkten bietenden Wachstumschancen zu nutzen."
