EU wants equity market to boom, but dealers may go bust

Legislators want to rebalance scales back in favour of primary exchanges

Europe wants to bolster its stock market to match overseas rivals. The latest twist in the EU’s attempts, however, has flummoxed the industry, as a group of legislators seek to tighten rules on the market’s dealers.

“The risk is an overall loss of liquidity for European markets, which is completely misaligned with the objective of growing our markets and making them more globally competitive,”
