A senior global regulator has challenged the cryptocurrency industry to step up and find ways to conform to global financial market standards, otherwise the official sector will be forced to intervene.

Martin Moloney, secretary-general at the International Organization of Securities Commissions, said regulators can no longer safely ignore the burgeoning asset class and the cryptocurrency space has reached a new development phase where it should be taken seriously as a long-term financial market
