Dodd calls for ‘strong, independent’ consumer watchdog

US Senate Banking Committee chairman Chris Dodd has reiterated the need for a "strong, independent consumer protection watchdog" to crack down on abusive practices.

In a statement published on the Banking Committee’s website, Dodd said a new agency with authority to create and enforce rules for consumer protection was needed. Dodd is the Democrats' chief negotiator in the ongoing bipartisan debates on a financial reform bill in the US Senate.
