Bank robberies fall in US and Europe in 2005

NEW YORK - The number of bank robberies carried out in the US and the EU fell last year, according to recent crime statistics.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) report, Crime in the United States 2005, revealed that 6,266 bank robberies were committed nationally last year, an 8.9% drop on the number in 2004. Cumulatively, incidents of bank robbery have dropped 14.6% between 2001 and 2005.

Although bank heists constituted just 2.1% of the 417,122 robberies committed in the US last year, they carried the highest dollar value, at an average of $4,169 per raid.
