Goldman takes the commodity derivatives crown

Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have long been the dominant financial institutions in the global commodities business. But their grip on this position appeared in jeopardy following the events of late 2008 when both institutions were on the verge of insolvency following the collapse of Lehman Brothers. Few parties at that time wanted exposure to their counterparty risk, and the reputation of both firms was also being tarnished by messy disputes with clients, particularly corporates in China.
