The Master of Financial Mathematics at Melbourne’s Monash University saw a large rise in applications last year – up 44% on the previous year to just under 400. As a result, the programme has become more selective and increased its intake by just three students over the same period, from 45 to 48.

The degree is still completed in two years – part-time students take four, though there are no part-timers in the current cohort – and fees have increased, to A$36,000 ($24,120) from A$33,500
