France’s Barnier to take McCreevy’s internal market role, EC confirms

Former French foreign minister Michel Barnier is to take over from Charlie McCreevy as internal market and services commissioner in the next European Commission (EC), which takes office in January 2010.

Although the appointment is subject to the approval of the European parliament, Barnier was confirmed on Friday as the preferred choice of EC president José Manuel Barroso when he announced his long-awaited allocation of portfolios for the 27-member commission.
