John Wengler jokes that he has a "Mark Twain resumé", in reference to the unpredictable turns his career has taken. Yet what may seem a tangle of disparate strings – engineering, journalism, urban planning, full-time fatherhood and energy risk management – has a single thread of continuity through it.

Indeed, Entergy's lively chief risk officer regards himself, above all else, as a translator. "The
