Jenkins set to leave Barcap

Howard takes over a role that has been held by Jenkins for a number of years. Under Jenkins’ leadership, the Barclays Capital investment-grade research team has ranked in the top three of Credit magazine's annual credit analysts poll, voted for by European investors, since the survey’s launch in 2000. Jenkins ranked highly in his own right as a credit strategist, alongside colleague Jim Reid.

Jenkins is understood to be officially on sabbatical from Barclays Capital but it seems unlikely that he will return, even though Barclays’ senior management has apparently made serious efforts to find Jenkins a role within the firm.

Investors who have long followed Jenkins and his team’s output – which is known not just for the quality of its analysis but also for an occasionally off-the-wall approach to presentation – will no doubt be surprised by his apparent departure. However his replacement, Howard, also has a high reputation. He joins from Lehman Brothers in New York, where he was previously head of credit strategy.

Observers commented that the appointment of a US-based head of credit research reinforced Barcap’s efforts to promote its fixed-income business in North America.
