Derek Higgs

Derek Higgs was named as the new chairman of Alliance & Leicester, the UK banking group, and took up the post in late October. Higgs is famous for the ‘combined code’ that created guidelines for the effectiveness of independent company directors. Higgs was appointed to that post in April 2002, with a mandate to improve corporate governance in the UK. The move came after several corporate scandals such as Enron and WorldCom had forced governments to rethink the way their companies
