Vorsprung durch AMA

Germany AMA Apparent enthusiasm for the AMA of Basel II has surprised BaFin, Germany's financial regulator. By Duncan Wood

LAST summer, the German financial regulator, the Bundesanstalt für Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht (BaFin) conducted a survey of the country's banks, asking them which of the new Basel Accord's approaches they intended to use when the rules come into force in 2008. The results caught the regulator on the hop.

By the time the responses were tallied towards the end of last year, fully 58 institutions had indicated that they were planning to apply for the advanced measurement approach (AMA). The AMA
