New chairman for BP

BP has announced that Carl-Henric Svanberg, the current chief executive officer of the Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson, will replace Peter Sutherland as the firm's chairman.

Svanberg, who is also a non-executive director of Swedish investment firm Melker Schörling, will join the BP board as chairman-designate and a non-executive director on September 1 2009 and officially take on the role of BP chairman on 1 January 2010. Svanberg served seven years as chief executive of Ericsson.

"Svanberg is a businessman of international stature who is recognised for his transformation of Ericsson," said BP chief executive Tony Hayward in a statement.
