US Comptroller urges banks to improve corporate governance

PHOENIX, ARIZONA -- The US banking industry must move quickly and forcefully to show it recognises the importance of basic principles of corporate governance that have not been universally observed, a top US banking regulator said in early October.

"Such an expression could have a material impact on investor confidence, among other things. At best it could have an impact on the need for even more legislation and regulation," Comptroller of the US Currency John Hawke said.
