New CFTC commissioners confirmed

The US Senate last week approved Jill Sommers and Bart Chilton as commissioners in the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

Chilton was previously vice-president for governmental affairs for the National Farmers' Union. Summers was previously head of governmental affairs at the International Swaps and Derivatives Association.

Chilton replaces Commissioner Frederick Hatfield, who resigned in December last year to join Patton Boggs, a political lobbying firm. He will serve for the remainder of Hatfield's term, which expires in April 2008.

Summers will replace Sharon Brown-Hruska, whose five-year term expires in April 2009. She resigned in July 2006 to join NERA, a firm of economic consultants.

Chilton and Summers join the CFTC's two incumbent commissioners, acting chairman Walter Lukken and commissioner Michael Dunn.
