NWE power market coupling struck by delays
The European Union’s biggest power market coupling project to date has been beset by delays and will not now be be completed before the end of 2013. What is behind the setbacks and what do they mean for continuing efforts to forge a pan-European electricity market? Gillian Carr reports
Market coupling is pivotal to the goal of European leaders to create a single energy market across the European Union (EU) by 2014. The idea involves linking together transmission allocation and electricity trading across countries and regions – a development that should bring several advantages to the continent’s fragmented electricity market. Market coupling paves the way for a single European electricity price and means cross-border capacity allocation should theoretically be more efficient
