EU adopts linking directive for emissions trading

The European parliament today voted to adopt the directive linking the European Union emissions trading scheme to other trading systems and CO2 reduction projects. The parliament agreed on a text for the linking directive earlier this month.

The linking directive will help European industry to make earlier use of the Kyoto "flexible mechanisms": Joint Implementation (JI) and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), a press release from the European parliament says. These allow member states and industries to meet part of the Kyoto targets by reducing greenhouse gas emissions in other countries - developing countries or countries
