OTC carbon volumes increase by over 80%

The London Energy Brokers' Association (LEBA) has announced that over-the-counter (OTC) carbon volumes have grown by 82% during the first five months of 2009, compared to the same period last year.

A total of 1,127,850,358 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) were transacted in the January to May 2009 period, compared to 618,624,949 tonnes in the same period of 2008. Volumes from January to May increased by 75% in the EU Emissions Allowance market (EUA), and by 134% in the secondary Certified Emission Reduction (CER) market.
