Congress passes Patriot Act, but only temporarily

WASHINGTON, DC – Just before Christmas 2005, the US Congress voted to extend the USA Patriot Act beyond 2005 – but only for another month.

This means the domestic surveillance law passed after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, has to be renewed before February 3, 2006. The reason for the one-month-only extension is to force Congress to act sooner rather than later on a long-term extension of the domestic terrorist laws.
